a note about job postings (as well as field schools, and other opportunities)

Jennifer Palmer

From time to time, I receive complaints about postings made to  It is worth noting that this website is a bit of an aggregator.  Information is passed along, but it is up to you to research the opportunity being presented.  If a potential employer asks for more information up front than you feel comfortable sharing, you may want to reconsider applying at that company.  There were recently a few job adverts where applicants were asked to share detailed personal information up front (including social security numbers), presumably for a credit/background check.  Apparently this practice is legal in most states, though I know personally I would be reluctant to share such information early on in the job application process.  If you do choose to share such information, be please comfortable with the prospective employer.  In other words, I don't think I would send detailed personal info to a Craigslist posting with an anonymous computer-generated return e-mail address.

On a related note, I also recommend refraining from posting more information than you need to in the resumes forum.  In the past I have had to e-mail website members asking them to remove items like social security numbers.  As someone who was a victim of identity theft, I can assure you that it is a most unpleasant experience. Please be cognizant of what you are sharing and that this is a very public forum.

Unfortunately I don't have the time nor resources to research every job, field school, internship, or volunteer opportunity posted here.  If you have questions about any of the opportunities being presented, you are certainly free to ask advice from other website users here in the discussion forum.  If you don't wish to share your name it is very simple to create an account using a different e-mail address and post anonymously.

If there is ever a posting that you feel should be removed from the website, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at
