Volunteer opportunity: Long Meadow PIT project, Sequoia NF, CA

Jennifer Palmer

Sequoia NF
New! Long Meadow PIT project

August 18-22; 25-29, 2014 Session #2 Only!

Must commit to one entire session; may participate in both

Join us in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains for an archaeological excavation among the Giant Sequoia! Our excavation this year will focus on two large prehistoric village sites with sizeable lithic (stone tool/tool production and use) scatters and bedrock mortars used for food processing. This is a known site, so PIT volunteers and Sequoia National Forest staff will re-record and map/re-map surface artifacts and features, but we will also emplace shovel test units to determine the subsurface boundaries of the site, and conduct excavation to further determine the overall depth and the actual or, at least, relative age of the sites.

The project area is located within the beautiful Giant Sequoia National Monument and is surrounded by a number of Sequoia Groves (some of the largest trees in the world). Volunteers will camp near the sites in a group campground for the duration of their stay. Be prepared for strenuous, dirty work with no showers or modern conveniences. However, there will be opportunity for a great experience outside of working hours: hiking, sight-seeing, and much more await you! We hope you will join us this summer as we explore the past on the Sequoia!

Please note: we will accept applications only until the project is filled, so apply today!
