health insurance for seasonal/temporary government archaeologists

Jennifer Palmer

Thought I would pass this along. I'm not familiar with the details (plan costs, etc.) but it may be worth looking into if this is applicable to your employment status. Jennifer

On October 17, 2014, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) published a final rule in the Federal Register expanding availability of FEHB coverage for certain employees on temporary appointments and seasonal and intermittent schedules. Under the regulation to expand FEHB coverage, employees on temporary appointments, employees on seasonal schedules, and intermittent employees who are expected to work at least 130 hours per month (30 hours per week) for at least 90 days will be eligible to enroll in an FEHB plan.  This rule allows for the same government contribution as full-time permanent employees during period of coverage.

After review of your appointment and work schedule, it has been determined that you are eligible to enroll in the FEHB program under this new rule.  You will have 60 days from the date of this letter to make an election of an FEHB health plan.  Your FEHB coverage will be effective the beginning of the next pay period after the SF-2809 has been received by the HROC – Employee Benefits Branch office.  To make your election, complete a hard copy SF-2809 FEHB Health Benefits Election form found here and fax the completed form to 303-985-6945.  Please use "Event code" 1E with the current date for "Date of event."

The OPM FastFacts flyer can be found here.  FEHB plan information may be found at this link

You are also eligible to enroll in the Flexible Spending Accounts and apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program

This rule does not extend coverage under a retirement plan, TSP, Federal Employees Group Life Insurance, or the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Program.
