JOB SUMMARY:

The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 2 temporary positions at John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time.  Appointments under this announcement are eligible for extension if workload and funding allow.  Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.  Anticipated Entry on Duty: May, 2015
Area information: John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site is a .09 acre property located in Brookline, Massachusetts. The mission of the site is to preserve and interpret the 1917 birthplace of the nation’s 35th president and the later memorialization of his boyhood home by the president’s mother, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. The historic house, collections, and neighboring Brookline community document the formative years of one of America’s most prominent political families and permit exploration of early influences that helped to shape the character and ambitions of John F. Kennedy. Primary resources include the Kennedy Birthplace Home and collections representing the 1914-21 period gathered and arranged for room exhibit by Rose Kennedy.  John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site is located in Brookline, Massachusetts. Brookline (population of 57,000) is a suburb of Boston, located approximately 4 miles west of the downtown/capitol area. Amenities are typical of a New England city and include a wide variety of educational and cultural opportunities, as well as professional, commercial and health services. The Boston area is home to nearly 50 colleges and universities. Government housing is not available but a variety of housing options are available for rent or purchase in the local area.
 
This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens.

Major Duties: The incumbent researches, prepares, and presents a full range of interpretive activities or services orally and in writing to facilitate appreciation and understanding of John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site. Uses appropriate interpretive principles, techniques, and skills to reach a wide variety of audiences. Independently researches both primary and secondary sources, continually increases personal knowledge of the site and its resources to incorporate into programs. The incumbent may also develop interpretive materials. The incumbent encourages visitor satisfaction with facilities and programs including providing accurate information and orientation at visitor contact station and exhibit sites. Anticipates, identifies, and responds to all visitor needs. The incumbent maintains visitor resources. The incumbent carries out daily operations according to written Standard Operating Procedures and established procedures. The incumbent assists with coordination of special projects involving coordination of other divisions and participants. Actively seeks to establish and/or improve relations with park cooperators, neighbors, and civic and community groups. The incumbent also helps to maintain program accessibility. The incumbent follows security procedures to protect structure and collections (opening and closing procedures including alarm system operations, tour number limits, and key access). The incumbent observes changes in, threats to, or inconsistent use of park resources, including curatorial collection on display or in storage.The incumbent communicates with supervisors, coworkers, and relevant people to foster effective and efficient park programs and operations. The incumbent accurately drafts and completes reports and documents in a timely manner.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances up to six miles daily, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion is required.  Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.  Extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland fire fighting and other emergency response duties.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed indoors at the visitors center as well as in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind and direct sunlight.
