JOB SUMMARY:

This is a Term Appointment with a full time work schedule that is expected to last for 13 months. This position may be extended at management's discretion, for a total of 4 years from the initial appointment.

This position is located within the National Park Service, Pacific West Region, Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Golden Gate NRA was established in 1972 as part of a movement known as "Parks to the People." Over the years, the park has grown to include two additional NPS units-Fort Point NHS and Muir Wood NM. The park's lands are located in three counties-Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo. Upwards of 17 million people per year visit this remarkable park, located in the midst of a highly diverse metropolitan area of 7 million people. One of the largest collections of historic buildings of any national park can be found in the park, along with dozens of plants and animal species that are accorded state or federal protected status. Recreational activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding and water sports.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area includes 34 distinct sites including popular destinations such as Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Marin Headlands, and Lands End.

Major Duties:
- Reach out to and provide a welcoming experience for high volume of visitors of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, age and abilities.
- Provide orientation about park resources, recreation opportunities and safety issues while working at a visitor center or out in the park.
- Develop and lead relevant and engaging formal and informal interpretive programs on a variety of park related subjects.
- Support visitor needs by fielding questions in person, by e-mail, social media or telephone.
- Provide immediate assistance to visitor in need by handling lost and found, separated parties or responding to emergencies.
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, park partners, concessions, contractors, and other outside groups.
- Lead volunteer and interns in a variety of activities; provide guidance and mentoring.
- Provide assistance coordinating projects and special events.
Physical Demands: The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending
steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due
to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of
interpretive programs.
Work Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
