This announcement is recruiting for seasonal Museum Technicians, GS-1016-05  positions not to exceed 1,039 hours in a service year for martin Van Buren National Historic Site.
 
The duty station of the position is at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, located in Kinderhook, NY a Hudson Valley farming community located 25 miles south of Albany, NY, 150 miles north of New York City and 150 miles west of Boston, MA.  Martin Van Buren NHS has no housing facilities and housing costs in and around Kinderhook are moderate to high. Summers may be hot and muggy and winters are cold and occasionally severe.  Cost of living is slightly above average. The local villages of Kinderhook and Valatie contain all the amenities typical of a small community - shops, libraries, restaurants and grocery stores.  The City of Hudson, NY just 10 miles south features major stores and a hospital.  The Albany, NY Capital District also provides all the attractions one would expect to find in any large urban area including hospitals, shopping malls, restaurants, entertainment, sporting events, concerts and educational institutions.  In addition, outdoor recreation and cultural attractions are close by to the east in Berkshire County, Massachusetts and Catskill State Park to the west.
 
Appointments under this announcement are eligible for non-competitive rehire in subsequent service years and individuals hired may be non-competitively rehired.

Assists in the management of the museum collection working with the Museum Specialist, under the supervision of the Curator, with and a high degree of sensitivity to the park’s cultural and natural resources.Performs proper and educated care in historic housekeeping and maintainshousekeeping journal.Carries out scheduled environmental monitoring in maintenance of the collection on exhibit and in storage and maintains records of museum environmental conditions.Regularly inspects collection for signs of deterioration or conditions promoting deterioration and advises senior curatorial staff.  Consults with Curator and Museum Specialist specialists to devise plans of action to ameliorate negative conditions and carries out corrective action when advised. Uses MAVA Museum IPM plan and advisement to monitor, record, and resolve pest problems in the museum collection. Identifies and makes known to Curator deficiencies in collections security. Assists with accountability procedures, such as park inventory, record keeping. Engages in educational activities on and off site in support of park preservation mission and acts as general clerical assistant to Curatorial Division.
