The Role
The Heritage Specialist is responsible for providing expert strategic and technical advice on all aspects of heritage management, establishing best practice planning, policies and systems and implementing strategies to most effectively manage heritage assets, meet compliance requirements and achieve TAFE NSW’s business objectives.
Key Accountabilities 
Develop and implement a strategic framework and plan to effectively manage TAFE NSW heritage assets to meet business objectives, best practice heritage management standards and compliance obligations. 
Undertake a review of existing records and all TAFE NSW sites to identify current and new assets of cultural heritage significance, assess and appropriately register new sites, scope and perform the further work required to ensure complete and accurate recording and effective management of the heritage items. 
Prepare comprehensive heritage site inventory sheets for listed sites that assess heritage significance, condition status and inform future site management, for inclusion in the TAFE NSW Heritage Conservation Register and State Heritage Inventory. 
Based on site data, research and analysis, develop Conservation Management Plans and strategies for the future management of heritage sites and assets, ensuring incorporation into TAFE NSW’s strategic asset planning processes and compliance with relevant standards and regulatory requirements. 
Research, analyse and assess options for heritage management strategies including use, alteration, maintenance and disposal, testing risks, making recommendations and advising on human, technical and financial resources required. 
Develop and project manage the portfolio wide heritage maintenance program against the defined heritage budget. 
Review technical documents for TAFE NSW projects and works proposals and provide expert advice on environmental and planning assessment issues relevant to heritage related matters. 
Establish and implement a robust governance framework including policy, systems, processes and practices to support effective heritage site and asset management, guide decision making, ensure effective risk management, compliance and delivery of outcomes that meet the intended objectives. 
Develop appropriate heritage management performance measures, assess and report on progress, evaluate effectiveness and implement a program of ongoing monitoring and improvement to address new or changed circumstances. 
Manage stakeholder relationships through effective communication, negotiation and issues management to ensure a strategic overview and full consideration of additional expertise, options and views on matters of cultural and historical significance and sensitivity. 
Act as the principal point of contact regarding heritage matters and issues, providing specialist heritage and general architectural advice and expertise on heritage requirements and ongoing management. 
Qualifications and Experience 
Tertiary level qualifications in Architecture specialising in Heritage Management, Heritage Conservation, Archaeology or equivalent experience. 
Demonstrated experience in heritage assessment and asset management. 
Sound knowledge and understanding of NSW heritage management related legislation and best practice standards as well as knowledge of heritage database systems, in particular, the State Heritage Inventory. 
Proven ability and highly skilled in heritage research, assessment, and ability to understand and review technical heritage, works and maintenance related documentation.
