Archaeological Field Technicians – Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas


QRI is looking for field technicians to staff archaeological survey projects at Fort Bliss.  The work is primarily archaeological survey and is expected to start in early to mid-November and last until sometime in the spring. Wage rate is between $15.00/hr and $18.00/hr based on experience.  See job description below for essential functions and qualifications of successful applicants. 


  1.  Familiarity with the GPS units (most likely a Juno) is a must have skill on survey at Fort Bliss.
  2. Identify cultural features, especially roasting pits, burned rock middens and ash stains that indicate features, using standard archaeological survey techniques and tools.
  3.  Identify artifacts and potential artifacts, especially burned rock, lithic debitage and ceramics.
  4. Take photos of excavation units, structures, and survey areas.
  5. Maintain an accurate record of excavation and survey field work.
  6.  Performs required physical work in adverse environmental conditions. Typical survey will cover 5-10 miles per day.
  7.  Perform tasks to a consistent standard.
  8.  Maintain a cordial working relationship with other members of the crew and supervisors.


  • B.A./B.S. in Anthropology or related field (with prior coursework in, or demonstrated knowledge of, archaeology, prehistory and history). Archaeological field school experience a plus.
  • Field school experience or a minimum 12 months CRM experience
  • Legible handwriting and note-taking skills.
  • Demonstrated work reliability
  • Ability to follow instructions. 

Physical Demands: The physical demands must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  1. The employee must be able to walk up to 10 miles per day over uneven, sometimes steep, heavily vegetated terrain carrying up to 25 lbs. of equipment.
  2. The employee must be able to systematically excavate natural soil strata using hand tools to include shovels and trowels.
  3. The employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 60 pounds.
