Paleontology Position Southern California


Title: Staff Paleontologist (On-Call)

Aspen Environmental Group (Aspen) is seeking an on-call Staff Paleontologist for field work occurring throughout the California southern desert region, including Imperial, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Work locations may also include coastal areas of San Diego and Orange counties. This is an on-call part-time position that begins immediately. Work hours and number of days in the field/office depend on assigned projects. High performing individuals may be considered for part-time or full-time positions at a future point in time.

Aspen specializes in providing expert compliance services for complex, multi-faceted infrastructure and public works projects. Aspen’s cultural resources group is innovative in the approach and use of new technologies, yet remains well-grounded in a professional understanding of federal and state laws and regulations, as well as local ordinances and general plans applicable to cultural and tribal cultural resources. Responsibilities. The selected candidate(s) may, as needed:

n  Perform pedestrian field surveys using Trimble GPS technology;

n  Monitor construction projects;

n  Respond to initial calls for inadvertent finds;

n  Complete limited site testing;

n  Participate in data recovery excavation;

n  Conduct worker’s cultural resources awareness training;

n  Assist with preparing PRMPs and completing paleontological sensitivity analysis; and

n  Assist with final report writing.


Education and Experience. Candidates must have a graduate degree in paleontology or geology. The candidate must have at least two years of experience working in Southern California rural and desert geological settings. Candidates must also be able to identify, record, and inventory fossil specimens and localities in a manner consistent with applicable federal, state, or local regulations and standards. Professional Geologist registration license a plus. Candidates must also:

n  Have expert knowledge of professional standards established by the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) and have familiarity with NEPA, FLPMA, PRPA and CEQA standards related to paleontology;

n  Demonstrate experience in collecting, analyzing, and reporting of paleontological findings;

n  Have a good understanding of the geological history relevant to coastal, mountain, and desert regions of Southern California;

n  Be able to recognize fossils and determine significance; have familiarity with broad geology, stratigraphy, and biostratigraphy patterns throughout southern CA;

n  Must have a valid CA Driver’s License with a clean driving record; and

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, highly motivated, well organized, and comfortable working remotely via Skype, cell phone app, cell conferencing, and email exchange. This candidate would also be able to transport themselves to the work site, and enjoy working in remote or challenging physical environments. Successful candidates will have the ability to maintain high quality field notes, and be able to maintain a professional demeanor in a variety of outdoor and remote environmental work conditions.


Compensation. Aspen offers competitive wages; Determined based on education, experience, and skill set.
