Archaeology Specialist - BLM, Winnemucca District Office


Working collaboratively with BLM Winnemucca District, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting to hire one (1) Archaeology Specialist to support the District’s Fuels and ESR Program by implementing field surveys and inventories. The central purpose of this project is to survey project areas for cultural resources, identify avoidance zones, as well as collect and enter data using BLM protocols. The primary focus areas are hazardous fuels, fire management and other vegetation management. The selected individual will be working with a GBI Archaeology Specialist as well as BLM staff. Specific duties include assisting with:
Class I literature review, and Class II and Class III cultural resources inventories for BLM actions associated with hazardous fuels, vegetation management and fire management activities. 
Reviewing IMACS site forms and filing reports and site forms.
Reviewing, submitting to SHPO, and filing cultural reports and filings associated with fire management, natural resources, and other projects.

Rate of Pay: $22.50/hour

The BLM Winnemucca District (WD) encompasses roughly 11 million acres, of which 7.38 million acres are public lands managed by the BLM. Elevations range from approximately 4,000 feet to close to 10,000 feet. Winnemucca lies roughly in the northwest part of Nevada, nested in the basin and range province of the western U.S. The WD is approximately 2.5 hours east of Reno, NV and 2 hours west of Elko, NV on I-80, and 4 hours south of Boise, ID on State Highway 95. Local applicants who have housing and require minimal relocation time will be strongly considered.
Technical requirements:
Educational degree and field experience related to archaeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies – in particular, historic Great Basin archaeology;
Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct and assess the condition of archeological site surveys (e.g.: mapping, data recording, site photography, GPSing, figuring out location of and routes in to and out of survey, and drawing artifacts or structures as needed);
Experience operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and electronic field data collection (previous experience operating Trimble units a plus);
Experience preparing, reviewing and documenting archeological fieldwork, excavations or historical properties; 
Experience using ArcGIS, preferred;
Ability to read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass; 
Previous experience working with the BLM, involvement in wildland fire operations, and/or working in the Central Great Basin region, desirable; 
Physically fit and able to hike to remote field sites in steep terrain both on and off trail, and accurately complete required field duties; and
Experience in and desire to assist with site forms, collecting and cataloging field data, coding sheets, photographs and narrative data to ensure that field data relationships are catalogued, maintained, and entered into appropriate databases.
Additional requirements:
Ability to work independently and in a team setting to accomplish project goals;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience including field technicians, agency personnel, and the general public;
Possess good organizational skills with ability to balance concurrent tasks;
Ability to operate basic computer equipment, including scanners, and Microsoft Office programs, including Access;
Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record with experience safely operating 4WD trucks on and off paved roads, including narrow and steep forest roads, and conducting routine vehicle maintenance; and
Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition.
