Archaeology Field Technicians (part time, as needed)

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with upcoming archaeological investigations on an as-needed basis. This is a contract position to be based out of our Richmond, Virginia and/or Charleston, South Carolina offices. The work will consist of archaeological fieldwork with the possibility of additional laboratory work to follow.  Successful applicants will be considered for anticipated long-term projects in the region. Lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided. Project workloads will dictate the number hours needed worked.

The qualified candidate for this position will assist JMT Project and Senior Archaeologists during field work in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and/or South Carolina. Projects include Phase I archaeological survey, which will involve the hand-excavation of Shovel Test Pits (STPs) and screened through 1/4 inch mesh screens. Additional work, involving controlled test unit excavation, is anticipated. The candidate will aid in identifying any pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during the STPs or test unit excavation. Preference will be given to candidates that will be available as on-call employees for the Summer with the potential for continuous work based on available contracts.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school is required 
  • Direct work experience in the Carolinas and Virginia/Maryland locations highly preferred
  • Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection is preferred
  • Experience in CRM-based archaeological survey and/or excavation is preferred
  • Knowledge of Southeastern and/or mid-Atlantic history and prehistory is preferred
  • Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing is preferred
  • Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic map is preferred
  • Ability to develop site maps and excavation drawings is preferred 
Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

Work is performed within a general office environment 5% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
