Fieldwork will be at Golden Eagle site, the only known prehistoric site with an enclosing embankment in the Illinois River Valley. CAA has been investigating this enigmatic site since 2013, beginning with large-scale remote sensing surveys across the site that revealed intact archaeological deposits such as the ditch-and-embankment structure enclosing the site. In 2014, we began initial archaeological testing of the ditch-and-embankment enclosure. Subsequent fieldwork has focused on other parts of the enclosure and the portion of the site near mound 2. In 2018, we’ll continue to investigate occupations and building sequences at the site.

Dates: June 10-July 21, 2018

Faculty: Jane E. Buikstra (bioarchaeology; human osteology), Jason L. King (field archaeology, bioarchaeology), Duncan McKinnon (geomatics)

Cost: $6,075, includes 9 credits, room & board, transportation to and from the site(s), and supplies.
