ACE NPS OH: Cuyahoga Valley CRDIP DHA Research Assistant Internship


Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking ONE CRDIP DHA Resource Assistant Intern interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of the National Park Service at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio.

This is an opportunity to participate in a structured 11-week practicum experience in Cultural Resource Management and Historic Preservation in order to expose students to these professional practices. Serving under the guidance of experienced cultural resource professionals, students will learn about the challenges of managing the rich cultural environment of the 33,000-acre park located along the Cuyahoga River between the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a special professional development internship offering that supports undergraduate and graduate students, from underrepresented populations, who wish to gain exposure to and experience in the historic preservation/cultural resources fields of work. Applicants must be 18-35 and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program. 


DHA (Direct Hire Authority) Internship targets exceptional upper-level undergraduate, graduate students, or recent graduates that are interested in pursuing careers with the NPS. Resource Assistant positions will be rigorous internships that develop the participant's technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities. 

DHA Applicants will be involved in cultural resource management projects that generate data and/or research that must be analyzed and presented to management at the end of the internship. If the position is an education or interpretation project, the participant must research, develop, and pilot a program or materials for use at the host site or by a program area.

Location: Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Brecksville, OH

Excellent recreational and educational opportunities are available within and near Cuyahoga Valley National Park, including hiking and biking trails, numerous restaurants and theaters, shopping, easy access to Cleveland, Akron, Lake Erie and multiple universities and colleges.


Compensation: The ACE CRDIP Intern will receive $400/week paid out every two weeks.  Each intern will also receive a one-time $640 travel stipend to offset the cost of relocation.


AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour ($1,230.69) AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of internship service hours. Additional enrollment is required.


Housing: The Park will provide students with dormitory-style housing with other students and seasonal employees. The CVNP typically provide students with private rooms with shared common spaces, including kitchen and laundry facilities, in one of the many historic houses within in the Park. Pets and extended family are not allowed in park housing. 


Project Goals: The goal of the practicum is to introduce students to the professional practice of historic preservation and cultural resource management in the context of an urban National Park in the Cuyahoga River Valley. The selected student will gain an understanding of the laws, regulations and practices that govern the treatment and use of historic properties within a National Park. The selected student also will be introduced to and practice inductive methods of field research and detailed building-structure-site recordation, as well as secondary research through exposure to current academic literature and primary research at local depositories and institutions. Students will become familiar with the National Park Service and Park approach to managing cultural resources, with an introduction to the Park's foundational documents and its resource inventories, including the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI), as well as the laws, regulations and guidance that govern Federal actions. All students will obtain a basic understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, NPS Historic Preservation guidance, and the NRHP Criteria for Evaluation.


Position Description:  

The intern's duties will include:

  • Completing an architectural field survey of buildings within the park that are scheduled for removal in accordance with the Park's building utilization plan and complete and NRHP eligibility assessment of any properties found to be historically significant. 
  • Producing a short historic structures survey report summarizing findings of the survey and complete CVNP National Register Assessment forms for significant properties for use in NPS compliance with historic preservation laws and regulations. 
    • The completed forms will include a detailed physical description of the subject, a historical narrative produced using primary (deeds, census records, NPS property files) and secondary (NPS context documents, scholarly literature) resources, and an NRHP Eligibility Assessment that will allow students to apply the NRHP Criteria for Evaluation. 
    • The intern will supplement each form with maps, a site plan and photographs keyed to the site plan. 
    • Should the intern find the property eligible for the NRHP, he or she will also develop mitigation measures that would offset its loss.
  • Completing specific projects in coordination with the Park staff that is commensurate with their education, experience and professional ambition. 
  • Serving as principal investigator under the direction of the Section 106/NEPA coordinator and with the full support of the Resource Management staff.


Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate their skills and experience through their resume and application and be in pursuit of obtaining or within two years of having obtained a Bachelor/Master/PhD degree in history, anthropology, cultural resource management, archaeology, public history, or other relevant field. 


  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be 18 to 35 years of age and are in pursuit of a higher education degree or within two years of graduation.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS.
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences; 
  • Ability to self-direct alone and effectively participate in a group or small team environments.
  • Must have the ability to operate basic office word processing programs, spreadsheets and editing software.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation. A personal vehicle is required
  • English proficiency is necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required.


  • Experience using global positioning system (GPS) units and geographic information system (GIS) software will be particularly useful to the Park.

The CRDIP Intern must be willing and able to represent ACE and the NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
