SWCA Environmental Consultants has an opportunity for a Crew Chief for our Austin, TX office. The successful archaeological crew chief will be part of a dynamic central Texas cultural and environmental resources planning team that enjoys excellent relationships with a wide range of local, regional, and state agencies, as well as private and nonprofit clients.

This is a full time Crew Chief-Project Archaeologist position for work within Texas and the surrounding regions.



The Archaeological Crew Chief will assist the Field Directors, Project Managers, Principal Investigators and GIS staff in completion of fieldwork including Phase I cultural resource survey and potentially Phase II National Register evaluative testing, Phase III data recovery, and monitoring. The staff member will also participate in technical research and writing and data QA/QC for reporting efforts. Use of topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to carry out required job functions. Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units. Applicant(s) should be able to work for 40 or more hours per week on a sometimes unpredictable and/or fluid schedule.

  • Fieldwork (survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery)
  • Supervising fieldwork (survey, site recording, testing, monitoring, and data recovery) of one or more crews in the field
  • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes) and to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Field GPS data collection using Trimble units
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology or a closely related field; Master's Degree preferred
  • An accredited Field School Certification is required
  • Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, back country roads required
  • One (1) year or more field supervisory experience
  • Professional report and site form preparation, research, and literature reviews
  • Past archaeological field experience in Texas and the surrounding region is a plus
