ACE/NPS MD: CRDIP Archaeological Research and Cultural Resource Management Internship - AmeriCorps


Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking ONE CRDIP Archaeological Research and Cultural Resource Management Intern interested in dedicating 10 weeks in support of the National Park Service at Monocacy National Battlefield in Maryland.

This is an opportunity to assist Monocacy National Battlefield's resource management staff in archaeological research through archival investigation, field survey, and archaeological excavation. A portion of the internship program will be based on investigating and documenting a prehistoric site, including the processing, cataloging, analysis, and data entry of archaeological materials.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a special professional development internship offering that supports undergraduate and graduate students, from underrepresented populations, who wish to gain exposure to and experience in the historic preservation/cultural resources fields of work. Applicants must be 18-35 and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program.

Compensation: The ACE CRDIP Intern will receive $400/week paid out every two weeks.  Each intern will also receive a one-time $640 travel stipend to offset the cost of relocation.


AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour ($1,230.69) AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of internship service hours. Additional enrollment is required.


Housing: Housing will be provided to the intern at no extra cost. 


Project Goals: Intern will receive hands-on experience in the management of NPS cultural resources ranging from prehistoric Native American sites, the Civil War, and the history of enslaved African-Americans. In addition to archaeological investigation, this position will highlight the importance of systematic compliance required for the protection of cultural resources. The intern will also have opportunities for classroom/webinar training, as available, in cultural resource management, NHPA Section 106, and other interdisciplinary resource management topics. There will also be an opportunity to learn from other park divisions (Resource Education & Visitor Services, Maintenance, and Law Enforcement) providing an excellent opportunity in understanding the National Park Service mission and how it is implemented.


Position Description: The intern will assist Monocacy National Battlefield's resource management staff in archaeological research through archival investigation, field survey, and archaeological excavation. Duties will include:

  • Investigating and documenting a prehistoric site, including the processing, cataloging, analysis, and data entry of archaeological materials. 
  • Assist with a variety of cultural resource management projects at Monocacy National Battlefield and throughout the National Capital Region (as needed). 
  • Participation in projects implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. 
  • Additional cultural resource management activities include condition assessments of historic properties, archaeological sites, monuments, cultural landscapes, records management, and museum collections management. 


Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate their skills and experience through their resume and application and be in pursuit of obtaining or within two years of having obtained a Bachelor/Master/PhD degree in history, anthropology, cultural resource management, archaeology, public history, or other relevant field. 


  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be 18 to 35 years of age and are in pursuit of a higher education degree or within two years of graduation.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS.
  • Must have a strong interest in history and the mission of the NPS.
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences; 
  • Ability to self-direct alone and effectively participate in a group or small team environments.
  • Physically fit and be able to lift up to40 lbs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing conditions and adapt research to follow-up on information revealed during the data-gathering stage.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation.
  • English proficiency is necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required.


  • Archaeological field school and GIS experience
