Archaeological Field Surpervisor


Circa~ is a leading local provider of cultural resources services in the fields of Archaeology, Architectural History, and Historical Research.  We currently have an opening for a full-time Archaeological Field Supervisor to join our team for multiple archaeological survey and excavation projects located primarily in Virginia.  These projects are across variable terrain and involve shovel testing, test unit excavation, feature excavation, and site mapping and documentation. 

Minimum qualifications include:

•    A master's degree in Archeology, Anthropology, American Studies, History, or a closely-related field;

•    Completion of an archaeological field school with at least three years of archaeological fieldwork experience and one year of supervisory experience;

•    Willingness to travel;

•    Physical ability to conduct archeological surveys in a variety of settings including urban and rural areas; 

•    Physical ability to walk to and within project sites over a variety of different terrains in all kinds of weather and standing or walking for long periods of time;

•    Must possess a working knowledge of standard archaeological survey and excavation methods, including proficiency with survey and GPS equipment and ArcGIS;

•    Experience with the excavation of complex stratigraphy, identification of landscape features, and the recovery of environmental samples is required; and

•    Must be familiar with the principles of prehistoric and archaeology and possess a broad familiarity with material culture and sites of the Mid-Atlantic Region.
