Harris Environmental Group (HEG) is looking for on-call (temporary) Secretary of the Interior (SOI) qualified Archaeological Field Director for cultural resources survey projects in the east-central Arizona. The Field Director will primarily support large block and linear survey projects in central Arizona but, may also support other survey, monitoring, and data recovery projects throughout the Southwest as needed.

This position will be based out of our headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. A significant amount of travel is required, mostly throughout Arizona and New Mexico. Current field efforts are located in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

The Field Director will be responsible for supervising a crew of three to ten archaeological technicians while conducting survey and site recording efforts in central Arizona. This includes identifying and documenting all types of regional artifacts and features, thoroughly filling out appropriate site forms, site/artifact photography, navigating survey transects with Garmin GPS, and mapping sites using Trimble GPS. Additionally, the Field Director will be responsible for ensuring thorough and detailed completion of all field forms and coordinating with the Project Director to plan a weekly survey schedule. Some report writing will also be required.

Required Qualifications (unless otherwise noted):

·         Master’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field

·         At least 5 years of experience in CRM, including at least 2 years in a supervisory position

·         At least 2 years of experience in CRM in eastern Arizona or western New Mexico

·         Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to CRM

·         Ability to work in hot conditions, inclement weather, rugged terrain, and remote locations

·         Ability to hike up to 10 miles a day in rugged terrain while carrying sufficient gear and water, typically in excess of 20 lbs

·         Experience identifying and documenting regional ceramic typologies of the Mogollon Highlands and Colorado Plateau

·         Demonstrated technical report writing and preparation experience

·         Proficiency with basic Garmin GPS devices and familiarity with Trimble GPS (using Terrasync) (preferred)

Duties:

·         Planning and executing large surveys

·         Coordinating multiple field crews

·         Training and mentoring field technicians

·         Ensuring accurate and organized data collection

·         Completing forms to agency standards

·         Delegating tasks to field staff

·         Working to keep projects on schedule

·         Assisting in the preparation of reports

·         Working closely with our Project Directors and Principal Investigators

·         Writing methodology and findings for technical reports

For non-SCA projects, pay is dependent on experience and education. Current projects fall under SCA wage rates. Per Diem is offered (for days worked) and varies between projects. Current work schedule is 8-on/6-off, Thursday to Thursday. Lodging is typically provided; however, sometimes car camping is required.
