Archaeological Field Director needed in Central/Western Region

Position Summary

The Field Director acts as the supervisory field lead for cultural resource investigations, including surveys, testing, data recovery excavations, and technical reporting. Consideration will be given to strongly qualified candidates for permanent full time positions. Responsibilities

  • Attends kick-off meeting with clients and agencies.Organizes fieldwork mobilization/demobilization and associated logistics.

  • Ensures the accurate identification and documentation of prehistoric and historical period archaeological sites, features, and artifacts and that site documentation standards complies with North Wind, agency, and SHPO documentation guidelines and requirements.
  • Ensures that all field data collected, photos and documentation logs are accurate, organized of high quality, and compiled daily.
  • Operates and/or supervises operation of GPS units, collection of all GPS field data, and uploading GPS data on a daily basis.
  • Previous experience documenting cultural resources using tablets device is a plus.
  • Works well with project team in a professional manner and communicates project goals and requirements to crew members.
  • Coordinates and updates project fieldwork, ensures that projects are completed on schedule and within allocated funding.
  • Reports schedule and project status to Project Manager on a regular basis.
  • Generates technical reports and other deliverables as required for each project.

Qualifications

Archaeological Field Director: Master’s degree in Archaeology or related field and 2 years relevant experience, or Ph.D with commensurate field and report writing experience. An ideal candidate will be permitted for work on state, BLM and forest lands in Idaho, Utah, Oregon, and Washington and carries a PLPCO permit. The work will require travel.

Physical Demands

Position will require extensive physical exertion, such as walking up to 10 hours a day at speeds of at least 3 mph over steep, uneven, heavily wooded, rough terrain in outdoor heat /cold stress conditions and weather elements such as wind, snow or rain.   Ability to carry up to 30 lbs. of equipment; ability to lift a minimum of 60 lbs.; ability to dig and excavate at least 1 cu meter per day; potential contact with poisonous plants, insects and animals.  Individual must be able to conduct these tasks while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.  Some fieldwork may be performed in remote locations and require camping.
