Position Purpose

Assists Field Supervisors with fieldwork and report writing. Conduct archaeological and historic field inventories in support of KLJ projects in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming.

Essential Functions

  • Complete fieldwork under supervision of the project manager or supervisor
  • Lab analysis of artifacts
  • Perform record searches
  • Create and coordinate reports, documents and other data
  • Compliant with KLJ quality standards
  • Utilize effective written and oral communication


  • Assist with pedestrian inventory, site testing and reports
  • Provide project correspondence, records and field notes
  • Completion of site forms and reports
  • Participate in meetings


  • A four-year degree in anthropology, archaeology, history or a related field and 1 or more years of experience is required
  • Must have completed an archaeological field school
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate motorized vehicles


  • GIS background is desired


The Archaeologist Technician receives close supervision from the Archaeologist III or above.

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual work 40 or more hours per week with 85% of the time spent in the field and 15% of the time is spent in the office.

  • Sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms
  • Talk or hear and communicate clearly

The employee must:

  • Be able to walk on uneven terrain up to ten miles per day
  • Frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 75 pounds

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
