Senior Archaeologist/Field Director – Great Basin and California


Far Western Anthropological Research Group is looking to immediately hire a Senior Archaeologist/Field Director for a full-time position in our Great Basin Branch in Carson City, Nevada. Priority consideration will be given to regional applicants with both precontact and historic-era expertise.

Founded in 1979, Far Western is one of the largest cultural resource management firms in the western United States and has a proven track record of doing innovative research within a CRM context. We currently work with federal, state, and local agencies in the Great Basin and California in the military, transportation, development, and energy sectors.

A candidate for Far Western’s position must have the following qualifications:

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) Professional Qualification Standards (PQS) in Archaeology:
    • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field.
    • At least one year of full-time professional experience in CRM.
    • Four months of supervised field and analytic experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.

  • At least one year of supervisory experience (i.e., crew chief, field director) in the Great Basin with demonstrable crew leadership experience in Nevada.
  • Ability to be permitted as a Crew Chief in Nevada and California on BLM Cultural Resources Use Permits.
  • Demonstrable field experience (e.g., survey, precontact and historic-era site documentation/data collection, excavation, NRHP evaluation, and familiarity with common data collecting devices and hand-held tools).
    • Demonstrated academic experience may be a substitute for CRM field experience.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to hike eight to ten miles a day for at least 10 consecutive days in variable terrain and weather.
  • Ability to camp overnight in remote locations, as needed.
  • Detail-oriented work approach, ability to adapt to varying data collection needs, attention to field methods/pace, and effectiveness in verbal and written communication.
  • Interest in and ability to positively and collaboratively interact with Native American representatives, clients, and coworkers.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently within Far Western’s Safety Program and other Far Western protocols, COVID-19 and otherwise.

Far Western will give priority to applicants that:

  • Have been previously permitted in Nevada and/or California.
  • Have knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations relevant to cultural resources.
  • Have knowledge/experience with documenting and evaluating historic-era/industrial cultural resources thematically associated with mining, logging/lumbering, transportation, utility development, etc.
  • Possess technical report writing and independent research skills as demonstrated through provided examples.
  • Actively participate in regional archaeological or historic preservation research.
