Job Announcement- Historic Resources Specialist I, NAGPRA Collections Coordinator

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, Mississippi is recruiting a Historic Resources Specialist I to serve as NAGPRA Collections Coordinator in the Museums Division. 

Starting annual salary: $30,385.00

This two-year, full-time, grant funded position involves work that is highly professional in nature. The main responsibility involve management of archaeological collections from Tunica and Coahoma counties that are subject to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The NAGPRA collections coordinator will report to the Director of Archaeology Collections.

Responsibility of the collections coordinator will include but is not limited to:

  • Locating, cataloging, rehousing, and photographing (pending permission through consultation) all potential cultural objects, particularly sacred objects, objects of cultural patrimony, and unassociated funerary objects from Coahoma and Tunica counties. 
  • Consolidating and entering data, working with Tribal interns, and fulfilling research regarding sites within the project scope. 
  • Digitizing paper records concerning NAGPRA collections from Coahoma and Tunica counties for documentation purposes. 

This work is sensitive in nature and will require an individual who is communicative and well-suited for consultation with Native American Tribes. Incumbent must be detail-oriented, motivated, and work well with others. Incumbent will also assist in reboxing and reorganizing the archaeology collections.

Education
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Preference will be given to candidates with NAGPRA experience.
