Introduction
The Deschutes National Forest will soon begin filling multiple temporary archaeological field technician positions for the 2022 field season. Openings are available at the GS-07 level at the Bend-Fort Rock, Crescent, and Sisters Districts and at the GS-06 level at Bend-Fort Rock District.
These are TEMPORARY SEASONAL archaeological field technician positions with a maximum six-month tour schedule (Not to Exceed 1039 hours). Positions are full-time (40 hours/week) and most crews work 10-hour days Monday through Thursday. The anticipated start date is mid-May to early June with a flexible end date that depends, in part, on candidate availability. Most tours go through September and may extend into October/November.
Government housing may be available.
Primary Duties of GS-7 Archaeology Technician Positions
• Independently conducts archaeological survey; identifies and documents prehistoric and historic resources
• Comfortable completing fieldwork independently and leading small crews
• Use of GIS and GPS
• Able to hike up to 12 miles a day with a 25-pound pack
• Experience with data entry/processing of site forms; Computer skills required
• Experience working in Oregon desired but not required
Primary Duties of GS-6 Archaeology Technician Positions
• Conducts archaeological survey, identifies, and documents prehistoric and historic resources with minimal supervision
• Use of GPS and some GIS
• Able to hike up to 12 miles a day with a 25-pound pack
• Experience with data entry/processing of site forms; Computer skills required
Selected individuals should be prepared and will be expected to work in inclement weather. Field technicians must be capable of walking over 10 miles per shift on steep terrain at high elevations.

Tentative Hiring Timelines

• Jan. 7 – Feb. 4, 2022- Application evaluation. Subject matter experts will generate reference evaluations and gather this information for selecting officials. Supervisory Reference Checks will occur during this time period. Please ensure your references are notified of this and they are available at the email address (preferred) or phone number provided on your application.
• Mid-February/March 2022- Applicants selected for jobs will be notified by a Forest Service representative by phone. Tentative selectees should be available by phone during this time and should have computer access to complete documents within 72 hours of being contacted with the tentative selection.
• May/early June 2022 – Estimated effective dates for positions. Look for the effective date on the Official Confirmation Letter, all other selection notices are tentative pending onboarding and employment suitability adjudication. Official Confirmation Letters will be received approximately 1 month prior to your start date, it is important to be in contact with your supervisor to confirm your reporting date and ensure all onboarding processes have been completed.

Selection Considerations for GS-07 Archaeological Technicians
• Experience organizing and leading crews in field work desired
• Experience with use of GPS for data collection required
• Ability to conduct all aspects of archaeological field work independently (navigate using compass and topographic maps, identify and record prehistoric and historic resources, recommend NRHP eligibility, use GPS, create site sketch maps, document daily survey accomplishments)
• Experience with ESRI ArcMap desired but not required
• Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in priorities
• Capable of working in rugged outdoor settings, self-motivated under minimal supervision
• Team player with an excellent work ethic
• Commitment to follow all safety policies/procedures and to promote a safe, inclusive working environment
• Valid driver’s license is required
• Desire for a career in archaeology

• Previous field experience and/or field school required
