The Boise National Forest is hiring seasonal archeologists and historians (with a focus of architectural history) for the 2022 field season. Employment is expected to be May through September 2022. Duty station for these positions will be Boise, ID in the Supervisor’s Office. Fieldwork will be performed across the Forest on the Mountain Home, Idaho City, Cascade, Lowman, and Emmett ranger districts. Employees are responsible for their own lodging.
ARCHEOLOGIST MAJOR DUTIES: Performing cultural resources inventories to identify and document cultural resources for projects on the Boise National Forest. Other work as assigned may include database, GIS, curation, and historic building preservation projects. This position requires considerable physical work in outdoor environments. The work includes strenuous activity such as walking, climbing, and backpacking, often in steep, rough terrain in isolated areas. At least one multiple night stay at a Forest Service guard station outside Boise is anticipated.
HISTORIAN MAJOR DUTIES: Applicants must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural Historian and have working knowledge and understanding of historic preservation standards, principles, and historic preservation law (Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act) and practical experience implementing these standards, principles, and laws. Experience with architectural history, historic built environment landscapes, and historic designed landscapes is preferred. The principal focus of this position is to document and evaluate Forest Service Campgrounds for their National Register of Historic Places eligibility. Other work as assigned may include documenting and evaluating recreation residences on the Forest. This position requires physical work in outdoor environments.
REQUIREMENTS, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Federal employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of their duty location.
