BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: These positions are located in Grand Teton National Park, within the Division of Science & Resource Management. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Supervisory Archeologist, assist with researching historic buildings and collecting background data for determinations of National Register eligibility and nominations. Use park archives and compiling information on site history, cultural landscape and treatment history to contribute to the coordination, writing, and presentation of related histories to assist cultural resource management. Prepare, enter, and maintain related generated data in the List of Classified Structures (LCS) and the Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) to help keep the park current on database entry. Assisting with the GIS coordinator to gather and prepare historic map, structure, district, archeology, and other relevant info for inclusion in the park-wide GIS database. Contribute to historic preservation project planning and scoping including providing recommendations of routine treatments, develop and draft scope of work, and organize pre-project activities. Draft routine compliance letters for the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office. Review pertinent professional literature and project planning documents. Assist cultural resource staff with field and hands-on work, including: archeological inventories, research, site condition updates, museum documentation, records management, object cataloging and rehouse, exhibit installation, museum property inventories, environmental monitoring programs, and database management. Assist with volunteers, clerical and administrative duties in support of cultural resources operations.
Physical Demands: Work within the office is sedentary except for occasional field work that is not regular and reoccurring. Surveys and construction site inspection trips and occasional backcountry projects that require hiking and possibly camping for several days. Such trips involve a considerable amount of physical activities, including but not limited to: standing, walking, climbing, lifting objects over 50 pounds, and stooping.
Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office environment but occasionally visits will occur in which work may be performed in all types of weather and conditions, and indoor museum storage areas that are confined and lack windows. Outdoor visits are not done on a regular and reoccurring basis. Outdoor assignment may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, and forests. On site visits, incumbent may be exposed to a variety of hazards associated with construction activities, including high noise levels, dust, chemicals, etc. Safety practices are followed in all work environments. Animal encounters are always possible, requiring a high level of alertness, caution, and knowledge of how to safely use bear spray.
