The University of Iowa – Office of the State Archaeologist seeks full time, temporary field technicians for all phases of archaeological fieldwork on various projects located across Iowa, beginning as early as March 2022 and running through November.
*Hourly pay $15.00–$20.00, depending on experience.
*Typically, 5-day, 40-hour weeks leaving from Iowa City and returning on weekends.
*Single room hotel paid and meal cost reimbursement up to $59/day.
*Transportation to and from field provided in University of Iowa vehicles.
*Preference will be given to those living within commuting distance of Iowa City, but long term projects can accommodate out-of-state employees.
We prefer, but do not require, experience with precontact (prehistoric) and postcontact (historic) site investigations including pedestrian surface survey and shovel testing, test unit and feature excavation, screening, soil description and other record keeping. A limited number of openings for lab work may follow or be concurrent with fieldwork, so experience with artifact processing and analysis is also desirable. Computer skills including MSOffice Excel, ArcGIS or QGIS, Adobe Photoshop, or skills in artifact illustration, flotation, or digital photography would be a plus.
Above all, a professional attitude recognizing that OSA and its employees represent the University and the State of Iowa, combined with the ability to work congenially and effectively with others and a willingness to work hard and learn new skills are personal characteristics we value most. Professional decorum is expected when handling human remains and culturally sensitive or funerary-associated artifacts, if encountered. OSA has a reputation for reliable and prompt payroll and per-diem payments, and opportunities for longer employment for more-skilled employees.
To apply: email a current vita (PDF preferred), three references, and your preferred contact information to Meagan Thies-Sauder (meagan-thies-sauder@uiowa.edu). Applications will be accepted through August 2022. Acknowledgement of receipt of your application materials will be sent within two weeks. Applications will be kept on file for possible openings throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
