Job Responsibilities
***This posting will be used to fill a summer internship position with the Environmental Services Cultural Resource Program.***
Intern will gain general exposure to all aspects of SCDOT’s Environmental Services Cultural Resource program which exists to help SCDOT comply with the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), including fieldwork, lab work, reporting, project review, and assisting with an ongoing Artifact Curation Project. Specific tasks could include:
- Fieldwork: works with staff to complete archaeology and historic architecture surveys for transportation projects, including using GIS software to create field maps, excavating shovel tests and recording archaeological sites, recording historic buildings and structures.
- Lab work: works with staff to process archaeological artifacts collected during surveys, including washing, identification, cataloging, and preparing the artifacts and project data for curation.
- Reporting: assists staff in writing cultural resource reports and using GIS to create maps and other report graphics, assists with filling out archaeological site forms and SHPO site cards for historic resources. Assist with using GIS software to create cultural resource and other reference layers to help with background research.
- Artifact Curation Project: works with staff to process existing artifact collections from SCDOT storage to prepare them for curation with the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA). Project will involve organizing artifacts and project data from past SCDOT cultural resources surveys that have not yet been curated. Intern will help to locate and compile relevant project data; wash, identify, and catalog artifacts as needed; re-bag and re-label artifacts and project data to current curation standards.
Pay Rate is between $14.00 – $21.00/per hour depending on qualifications.Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma; or an approved equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.
Applicants must be accepted into or currently enrolled in a two-year or four-year college or university program in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Museum Studies, or a related field.
