Examples of Important Duties
- Research, design and teach curriculum-based archaeological programming for K-12 school groups, to include field trip classes, tours and outreach programs, in collaboration with JHMP Education Program Manager and Parks Archaeology staff.
- Research, develop and design pre- and post-visit educational lesson plans to correlate with JHMP’s onsite archaeology programmatic offerings utilizing local and state curriculum standards.
- Instruct curriculum-based field trip classes and outreach programs for K-12 public/private schools and homeschool groups related to archaeology, Montgomery County history and African American history.
- Teach/conduct weekly public programs related to the archaeological resources.
- Under specific direction from Principal Investigator, Senior Parks Archaeologist, participate in archaeological investigations at JHMP, including research, field, and lab work, with the goal of expanding archaeological interpretation and programming at the JHMP.
- Support the promotion of JHMP through the development and delivery of outreach programs, contributing social media content, and occasionally representing JHMP at external meetings and events.
- Work with the JHMP Education Program Manager to research, develop, coordinate and teach revenue-generating family and adult programs classes/workshops/programs throughout the year–related to the archaeological investigations of JHMP. (Ex: Homeschool Days, lecture series, holiday programs)
- Work with the JHMP Education Program Manager to coordinate special events and programs throughout the year, to include assisting with set-up/breakdown, selecting speakers/performers, completing internal reports, and instructing volunteers.
- Work cooperatively with Education Program Manager to cultivate relationships with area educators, senior communities, tourism related businesses, nonprofits and other community organizations.
- Provide assistance operating the Museum’s admissions desk by opening/closing buildings, greeting guests, ringing up admissions, answering customer questions/calls, restocking brochures and merchandise.
- Support duties for general upkeep, maintenance and cleaning of facilities.
- This position reports to the Historic Site Manager for JHMP.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- References and a valid Maryland, District of Columbia, or Virginia driver’s license are also required; or the ability to acquire one.
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, history, American studies, museum studies, anthropology, historic preservation, or a related field; and three years of professional or related experience, including one year as a program coordinator or supervisor; or
- Master’s degree in one of the above fields; and one year of experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Specialized knowledge and experience in anthropology or archaeology including field work, lab work and research methodologies necessary. Experience in museum educational programming, historical interpretation and teaching curriculum-based programs preferred. Experience with researching, developing and conducting curriculum-based classes/tours/programs preferred. Candidates should be proactive and customer oriented.
- Must be comfortable with public speaking and working with students, adults and diverse audiences. Must be able to provide excellent customer service when working with a diverse public, staff, and volunteers. Must be able to communicate with supervisors, colleagues, customers, and key stakeholders in a professional, positive and proactive manner verbally and in writing. An attention to detail is required.
- Training will be provided on relevant historical and facility information.
- Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish especially) are a plus
WORK CONDITIONS:
- Ability to work a regular daytime schedule of Wednesday – Saturday and occasional weekends or evenings is required
- Ability to regularly work onsite/in person with staff, volunteers, and the public
- Ability to regularly move between the historic house (staff offices), visitor center, and grounds
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up 40 lbs.
- Frequent use of multiple technical equipment and software applications
- Ability to provide regular transportation to work; and there is also access to public transportation to this job site.
- Training will be provided on relevant historical and facility information.
- First Aid, CPR and AED certification training available.
Supplemental Information
- The office is located at 11410 Old Georgetown Rd, North Bethesda, MD 20852.
- This part-time, year-round position does not qualify for benefits
- Flexibility in their schedule, with the typical week being 9:30am – 4:40pm, Wednesday through Saturday.
- Salary is $22.00/hour.
