Position: Archaeological Field Techs and Crew Chief (temporary, 7 weeks) for pedestrian survey in Esmeralda County (near Tonopah), NV.
Project Description and Schedule
NewFields Environmental and Engineering, LLC is currently hiring archaeological field techs and one BLM-permitted crew chief for approximately seven weeks to help complete a Class III Inventory for a solar project in Esmeralda County, NV. This project is a block pedestrian survey only—no subsurface testing is anticipated.
The project is scheduled to begin Monday, June 6th and is expected to take approximately seven weeks. The work schedule will be eight 10-hour days followed by six days off.
Compensation
The pay rate for field techs will be $42/hr., which is an all-in rate that includes compensation for per diem and accommodation. For a BLM-qualified crew chief, the rate will be $47/hr. Crew will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation, preferably in Tonopah. Field techs and crew chief will be responsible for providing their own transportation to the project area.
Responsibilities:
Field Techs:
- Carry out a Class III inventory (pedestrian survey) of an approximately 8,700-acre project area and a one-mile linear project area.
- Identify and record new artifacts and sites within survey area using Fulcrum data collection app.
- Revisit and update previously recorded site boundaries.
- Complete artifact worksheets for newly identified sites.
- Update and/or complete new Intermountain Antiquities Computer System (IMACS) forms as needed.
Crew chief:
- Supervise field crew during pedestrian survey, keeping crew on transect and moving at a productive pace.
- Supervise data collection in the field.
- Prepare evaluation determinations for newly encountered archaeological sites using National Register criteria.
- Prepare paperwork for technical reports.
- Ensure that fieldwork safety protocols are being observed.
Qualifications
Field tech:
- A BA in archaeology, anthropology or related field is preferred, but not necessary if applicant has completed advanced undergraduate course work AND meets minimum field experience criteria.
- 6-12 months previous archaeological experience with block survey in the Great Basin.
- Ability to walk long distances over rough terrain in the heat.
- Attention to detail and good communication skills.
Crew Chief:
- Crew chief must have been previously permitted with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) at the crew chief level or be eligible for BLM permitting. Permitting guidelines can be found on page 32 of The BLM Nevada State Office’s GUIDELINES AND STANDARDS FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVENTORY; SIXTH EDITION.
