Primary Purpose of the Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to identify, protect, and enhance North Carolina’s historic properties and districts through a coordinated statewide program of incentives, information and technical assistance for public agencies, private organizations, and the state’s citizens. This position requires the incumbent to have good verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to work well with the public.
The counties the successful candidate will serve are home to architectural resources that include traditional downtown commercial districts, port towns, farms, suburbs, crossroads, and tourist attractions in the Eastern Region of North Carolina. The region’s landscapes and buildings are as diverse as the people and communities that will rely on the successful candidate to help them meet their preservation goals.
Key Responsibilities:
This position is located within the Survey and National Register Branch of the Historic Preservation Office (HPO), with the workstation based in the HPO Eastern Regional Field Office in Greenville, North Carolina. This branch administers the statewide architectural survey and the National Register of Historic Places program.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Processing nominations to the National Register of Historic Places;
- Comprehensive architectural surveys for counties and municipalities;
- Present National Register of Historic Places nominations and Study List properties to the State Review Board;
- Occasionally assist with technical assistance and training for local historic preservation commissions;
- Management of a federal pass-through grant program for the federal Certified Local Government (CLG) program;
- Environmental review of development projects that may affect historic properties and archaeological resources within the Eastern Office service region.
The North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office assists private citizens, private institutions, local governments, and agencies of state and federal government in the identification, evaluation, protection, and enhancement of properties significant in North Carolina history and archaeology. The agency carries out state and federal preservation programs and is a section within the Division of Historical Resources.

- Must have knowledge of American architectural history;
- Must have working knowledge of National Register criteria and guidelines;
- Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for history or architectural history, as specified by federal regulations (36 CFR 61.4(e));
- Must have a valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
- Must be willing to travel for day and occasional over-night trips.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master’s degree in historic preservation, planning, architectural history, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in historic preservation;
or
Bachelor’s degree in history, planning, or architectural history, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in historic preservation;
