By joining our Department of Highways/Division of Environmental Analysis/Cultural Resource Branch as a Archaeologist Coordinator in Franklin County, you’ll have the opportunity to analyze the impacts of proposed transportation improvements upon archaeological resources and coordinate the results with the appropriate resource agencies. Coordinate the work of professional archaeologists and other field workers in archaeological investigations. Personally perform archaeological research and documentation of sites.
Holders of the Archaeologist Coordinator position will complete tasks such as:
- Provide in-depth review and analysis of consultant reports to ensure compliance with Kentucky Heritage Council (KHC) specifications. Prepare response letters promptly according to Division procedures. Coordinate customer relationship management (CRM) contract work in accordance with project schedules.
- Organize site visits to facilitate early coordination and archaeological evaluation and documentation according to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC)/Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)/State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) agreements, policies, and specifications.
- Provide timely and appropriate feedback to ensure efficient KYTC compliance with Section 106 and other regulatory requirements.
- Conduct occasional and limited field investigations pursuant to obtaining Section 106 clearance for KYTC projects
Desired candidates should possess the following skills or experience applicable to this position:
- A demonstrated familiarity with Section 106, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), additional pertinent state and federal laws regulating archaeology, and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) assessment of archaeological resources, which will be significantly enhanced in this position.
- Familiarity with the archaeology of North America and specifically, the Ohio River Valley, which will be significantly enhanced in this position.
- Familiarity with archaeological investigation techniques and general knowledge of analytical procedures and soil formation processes, which will be significantly enhanced in this position.
- The ability to create and assess scopes of work, including schedules and budgets, for archaeological investigations, which will be significantly enhanced in this position.
- Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, etc.) and should have a good understanding of geographic information system (GIS).
- Good organizational skills as well as interpersonal skills and should be proficient in communicating complex ideas or projects in brief.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Ph.D. in anthropology with an emphasis in archaeology, United States prehistory or cultural resource management (applied anthropology).
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology or cultural resource management (applied anthropology) or a related field supplemented by one year of archaeology or anthropology experience concentrated in the United States will substitute for the primary education.

Probationary Period
