CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION: This position is duty stationed at NAVFAC Marianas, Joint Region Marianas headquarters on the island of Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines. Guam averages 86 degrees (F) year-round with a multitude of activities, including diving and snorkeling at Tumon Bay Marine Park, sky diving, beautiful hiking trails; as well as three shopping malls and four movie theaters. Joint Region Marianas (JRM) was established in 2009 as the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force on Guam combined headquarters. The Department of the Navy manages thousands of known terrestrial (and submerged) cultural resources on Guam and within the JRM AOR, including Chamorro (prehistoric), Spanish-era, and World War II era historic properties retaining a high degree of historical integrity.
A field Archaeologist will be duty stationed on Guam to provide on-site technical support and assistance to the Joint Region Marianas (JRM) Cultural Resources Manager (CRM) and actions related to the Programmatic Agreement between the Commander, Joint Region Marianas and the Guam State Historic Preservation Officer, Regarding Military Training and Testing on and within the Surrounding Waters of the Island of Guam, including research and assessment of potential impacts to cultural resources by military training and testing within the JRM Area of Responsibility (AOR). In fulfillment of this objective, the Archaeologist will conduct quarterly impact assessments, literature searches and data gathering, archaeological inventory surveys, archaeological testing, National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations, data recovery, monitoring, and support annual meetings with stakeholders.
This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, collaboration, flexibility, and diplomacy. The successful incumbent will provide cultural resource inventory and evaluation technical support, review and assessment of impacts on archaeological sites and historic properties, and coordinate with project proponents and managers, as well as Installation GIS Managers. Relocation expenses may be available; conditions apply.
Required Job Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field.
• Minimum of three (3) years of post-graduate professional archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology.
• Professional expertise in the National Register of Historic Places Evaluation Criteria for determining eligibility for listing as outlined in 36CFR 60.4
.• Proficient in archaeological research, including research design, mitigation plans, fieldwork, analysis, and report and site form preparation.
• Have a thorough understanding of most standard computer programs
.• Previous work experience in a highly structured, hierarchical workplace with a well-defined chain of command.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date. CEMML will not provide sponsorship for this position.
• Ability to pass a federal background check in order to obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC).
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.•
Preferred Job Qualifications
• Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate expertise and knowledge working with U.S. federal historic preservation laws and regulations that govern cultural resource management, including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
• Previous archeological field experience in the Pacific region, particularly the Mariana Islands, is highly desirable.
• Ability to adequately learn and apply local regulations and laws pertaining to the management and protection of cultural properties in Guam
.• Meet the Secretary of Interior’s professional qualification standards in Archaeology (36 CFR, part 61).
• Experience conducting Phase IA, IB and II field investigations and authoring reports and other documentation for state and local level review.
• Demonstrated familiarity with military culture and its established lines of authority, procedures, and protocols is beneficial.
• Working experience with ESRI ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro software, Arc Catalog software, ESRI ArcGIS Online. Sound GIS dataset management skills
.• Familiarity with agreement documents such as Programmatic Agreements (PA) and/or Memorandum of Agreements (MOA).
• Excellent written communication and organizational skills and the ability to work with a wide range of data and meet deadlines.
• Ability to act with diplomacy and discretion at all organizational levels with excellent judgment, adaptability, interpersonal, and communication skills is highly desirable.
