Programmatic Goals: Capacity Building & Historic Preservation (Archaeology)
What is the site? The Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex is home to multiple entities including a museum, an archaeological research center, and a National Register of Historic Places site. The mission of the complex is to preserve the site of the Grave Creek Mound, interpret the archaeological record of West Virginia for the public, and manage the state’s archaeological collections. The museum exhibits begin with fossils and ice age animals, a tour through archaeological sites in West Virginia, and then culminates with displays about the prehistoric Adena people and the construction of the Grave Creek Mound.
What is the project? The purpose of this project is to help the small research staff at Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex with the processing of a backlog of artifacts and assisting with promotions and community engagement.
Daily tasks will involve: The member will typically serve five days a week during regular operating hours (Tuesday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm) in the research lab at Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex. They will be assigned the following tasks:
- Processing artifacts including washing, labeling, repackaging, recording in the database, and digitizing archival documents and images.
- Developing social media content.
- Assisting with school group tours.
- Designing outdoor signage for educational purposes.
- Creation of a volunteer handbook.
Additional information:
The annual stipend is $20,000 + an educational award of $6,495. The service member will primarily be working on collections management and public outreach in our museum. It’s a perfect position for someone right out of undergrad who would like some hands-on experience working in an archaeology museum and repository.
