Archaeological GIS Specialist
Applied Archaeological Research Inc. (AAR) is seeking an Archaeological GIS Specialist to
support project work in Oregon and Washington. This role will primarily focus on creating maps
and graphics for reports, preparing GPS units and managing GPS data, and supporting field
operations as needed.
Depending on experience, the role also provides the opportunity to conduct archaeological
fieldwork, support the preparation of archaeologic collections for curation, and manage
archaeological collections.
This position is a permanent, full-time, hourly position that reports to the Principal Investigator.
Job Duties:
• Creating maps and figures for technical reports, using Esri ArcMap Pro 3.0 and Adobe
Illustrator.
• Georeferencing historical maps and project plans to assist with project planning and
archaeological research
• Creating field maps and assisting in field preparation by creating sampling grids and
navigation maps, and identifying previous archaeological work and sites within project
areas
• Managing AAR’s GIS database of previous project work and reference data
• Managing Trimble Geo7X GPS devices, including loading data and data dictionaries for
reference in the field, downloading data, and performing data validation using GPS
Pathfinder Office
• Maintaining data standards and metadata and share data with clients and project partners
• Managing GIS licenses and products and troubleshooting GIS system issues
Qualifications
Required
• GIS Certificate or 2+ years’ experience with Esri ArcGIS
• Familiarity with the cultural resource management industry and archaeological fieldwork
• Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Access databases, Excel, or comparable software
applications
Desired
• Undergraduate degree in anthropology or a closely related field
• Completion of Archaeology Field School, experience conducting archaeological
fieldwork
• Experience with GPS devices and data collection
• Experience with georectifying historical maps
Compensation and Benefits
• The starting wage is between $29 and $31 depending on experience and qualifications
