Archaeological Field Technicians

Job Description
The Gainesville, Florida office of Commonwealth Heritage Group is seeking archaeological field technicians for fieldwork beginning in September 2022. The project is a Phase III in downtown Miami, Florida with Paleolithic, Archaic, Woodlands, and modern components. The current timeline puts the project ending in 8-10 months. The workday is 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, weekends optional.
Accommodations are paid through the weekends. This project is headed by Archaeological & Historical Conservancy in collaboration with Commonwealth, SEARCH, TRC, PaleoWest, and Terracon. Typical work will include excavating 2×2 units into the water table, water screening of artifacts, completing paperwork, drawing plan views, and carrying buckets.
Note: High heat tolerance is required—Florida is very hot and humid this time of year. Water and cooling stations are provided.
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a closely related field.
● Ability to work independently and in teams to excavate units and screen shovel tests.
● Able to navigate/traverse difficult terrain.
● Walk and work for extended periods in high temperatures.
● Identify pre-contact Native American and historical artifacts.
● Describe soil contexts with appropriate terminology.
● Enthusiasm for archaeology and the desire to collaborate with colleagues.
Pay ranges from $16 to $20/hour based on training and experience. Hotel (single occupancy), and $50 per day diem (no receipt documentation required) provided.
Note: The Miami project has an additional $2/hr. hazard pay due to pollution (petroleum) from former occupation of the site. Masks, gloves, and other PPE are provided. Air quality, soil contamination, and other hazards have been regularly tested and are continually monitored to ensure a safe work environment. Hazard pay applies ONLY to the Miami project, and technicians may be switched to other Commonwealth projects as required by work loads.
Commonwealth Heritage Group also has opportunities for additional fieldwork throughout Florida. Fieldwork will generally involve Phase I surveys for moderate-scale (ca. 1-4 week) projects. Technicians will be part of a team responsible for conducting pedestrian and shovel test surveys, as well as documentation of survey efforts and archaeological resources. Qualifications listed above are required in addition to the ability to carry field equipment and personal gear, including hydration supplies and lunch due to the remote distances from field vehicles and nearby towns. Transportation to/from the job location may be provided, depending on location. Mileage reimbursement will be provided if personal vehicles are needed. Weekend hotel stays will be considered for reasonable requests.
