Job Description
Commonwealth Heritage Group is searching for archaeological field technicians for archaeological fieldwork during the 2021 season throughout the Midwest US. Fieldwork will primarily involve Phase I projects (pedestrian and shovel testing survey), with the potential for Phase II and Phase III work as available.
Archaeological Field Technicians are part of a team that is responsible for conducting shovel testing, pedestrian survey, and site documentation, which includes feature and artifact identification and analyses; site descriptions; photographs; and mapping. Archaeological field technicians are required to perform the following tasks in the field:
· Excavate a minimum of 10 STUs (50 by 50 cm) or 20 STPs (35-cm round) per day depending on state requirements
· Walk up to 6 miles a day in rugged terrain while carrying appropriate gear
· Excavate 1-by-1-m test units or similar in stratigraphic profiles and complete associated unit paperwork
· Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts
· Conduct archaeological survey and testing
· Complete site sketch maps
· Complete field forms accurately and concisely
· Use GPS units (Trimble and/or ArcCollector-based systems) for navigation and recording field data
· Photograph resources
Qualifications: Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school. Candidates must have experience identifying and recording prehistoric and historic resources in the Midwest. Candidates must also have a minimum of 6 months of field experience (e.g., survey, testing, data recovery). Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Candidates should also have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.
