Responsibilities
DEVELOPMENTAL INTERN: This is an indefinite, Excepted Service appointment that may continue if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available.
Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment.
Major Duties: This position is a developmental Pathways Intern position with an emphasis on Archeology in the Resource Stewardship and Planning Division. Gettysburg National Military Park preserves the site of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg and Gettysburg National Cemetery, where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address.
-The primary duties of this position involve assisting archeological staff in the completion of archeological surveys.
-Fieldwork will consist of archeological/ metal detecting surveys to identify areas that could be potentially impacted from project activities. Additionally, archival research, site recordation, photo documentation, mapping, and laboratory analysis of recovered cultural materials will be required.
-Participates as a field crew member. He/she will conduct routine archeological surveys in areas planned for project work, employing a combination of shovel-testing, metal detection, and visual inspection.
-Identifies and delineates archaeological sites, prepare site location maps, record findings, photograph and draw, as appropriate, artifacts recovered, prepare site sketches, perform laboratory analysis of recovered artifacts, and catalog and prepare for curation recovered materials. Reports such findings and, in consultation with the Park’s Archeologist, prepare recommendations to be included in planning documents.
-The work may include archival research, field investigations, laboratory analysis, and artifact cataloguing.
-Such work requires a basic understanding of professional archeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
-Field work requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and carrying objects over 25 pounds over rough, rocky, and sometimes hazardous surfaces.
-In addition, the incumbent(s) may be exposed to prolonged heat, humidity, and stinging insects.
-The work requires regular and recurring work in a forest environment and packing heavy surveying equipment.
-A physical capacity for working outdoors, often in isolated areas, is required.
-Laboratory/office work requires longs periods of sitting and mental effort, concentrating on minute details, data entry, and drafting precisely scaled sketches and maps.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed both indoors and occasionally outdoors with moderate risks.
FPL GS-07: Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Occasional travel – You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month.
