- Physical Demands / Work Environment: Interns will periodically participate in fieldwork and some moderate physical activity should be expected. Laboratory work will involve some lifting, primarily in the form of artifact boxes, which can range in weight from 10-35 lbs. Some travel, including overnight travel, will be expected as part of the duties of the intern positions. All travel will be at the expense of the Archeology program provided in the form of reimbursements through the NCPE program.

The Northeast Archeological Resources Program (NARP) is seeking up to three 1000-hour internship positions. Interns will serve as Project Assistants for archeological field surveys and inventories currently scheduled to occur in 2023.
Interns will provide program support by carrying out project management tasks, including project tracking and scheduling; supporting communication between NARP, parks, and partners; and identifying equipment and overall project needs.
All three interns will have the opportunity to work with professional National Park Service (NPS) Archeologists and Cultural Resources staff on archeological field projects and assist with processing artifacts in an archeology laboratory. Likewise, the interns will engage their skills, creativity, and/or enthusiasm through photographing objects, using digital imaging software, creating social media and website content, and/or developing lesson plans.
One intern will be assigned to each of the following Baseline Survey or Civil Rights Initiative funded projects:
1) Assist the program and park staff at Colonial National Historical Park in an archeological survey to identify the locations of historically enslaved dwellings associated with the Travis Plantation on Jamestown Island, Virginia. This project will include participating in archeological fieldwork, artifact processing and cataloging, and public outreach efforts to connect the Descendant Community and affiliated partners with the archeological research and findings.
2) Assist the program and park staff at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site to carry out archeological investigations to uncover archeological evidence of African American histories and experiences at Van Buren’s home, Lindenwald, in Kinderhook, NY. Following the completion of a Historic Resource Survey, archeological investigations will focus on locating and identifying the material culture and archeological evidence of the history of the African American experience before, during, and after the occupation of Martin Van Buren and his family. Field excavations, Descendant Community engagement, and public outreach will be carried out and supported by the intern.
3) Assist the program and park at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine with an ongoing baseline inventory work including development of archeological sensitivity databases using historical and archeological records to identify potential archeological survey areas, report writing, collaboration with tribal partners, and development of social media posts and other interpretive deliverables to raise awareness of the park’s archeological stewardship
Interns will be supported and mentored by professional NPS Archeologists and Cultural Resource staff and participate in additional NPS professional development opportunities.
