Logan Simpson, a growing cultural resources, environmental planning, and landscape architectural design firm, currently seeks a full-time Archaeological Field Director to work in either our Tempe, Flagstaff, or Tucson Arizona office. Duties and responsibilities include managing fieldwork on cultural resources surveys and excavation projects throughout Arizona and adjacent states and taking the lead on preparing technical survey and excavation reports.
The candidate must have demonstrable expertise supervising all aspects of cultural resources management (CRM) survey and site-recording and preparing the associated reports. Candidates should know how to accurately yet efficiently record cultural resources in the field, manage a field crew, operate GPS units with a data recorder, prepare site records, and conduct quality control/quality assurance reviews of field data. The candidate also must be able to proficiently and independently prepare complex technical documents for a full range of various cultural resources projects.
Minimum requirements include the following:
• Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or closely related field.
• 5+ years of CRM archaeology or agency experience, including 2+ years of supervisory experience.
• Proficiency with technical writing and Microsoft Office products.
• Ability to demonstrate written and verbal communication skills.
• Sufficient field experience to be listed as a Project Director on an Arizona State Museum blanket permit.
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and in remote locations (camping is a possibility).
• Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day over steep terrain for extended periods of time.
• Willingness to work overnight and on weekends.
• Willingness to abide by any COVID-19 safety protocols, including social distancing and wearing face masks.
The preferred candidate also will be able to obtain current permits at Field Director level with the BLM, National Forest, and other agency lands in Arizona and, ideally, in one or more adjacent states (NM, UT, NV, CO, and CA). The preferred candidate also will be knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations and demonstrate an established area of analytical expertise and/or archaeological research interest. Ideal candidates also will have field experience with archaeological testing and data recovery. A graduate degree in Anthropology or closely related field is preferred but not required.
