Duties
Major Duties:
Incumbent will participate in basic archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts. Records data and prepares survey records such as site maps, photographs, field notes, etc. Conducts limited supervised excavation and testing of sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials. Processes specimens recovered in the field and prepares specimens to be sent to dating laboratories. Identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation. Maintains field equipment and supplies. Maintains related databases, forms, maps, and files. Performs data entry into GIS systems, databases, spreadsheets and archival records.
Works cooperatively in a team environment. Field work is performed outdoors with exposure to heat, sun, insects, allergens, and other hazards. Work requires physical exertions such as bending, crouching, stooping, and lifting.
Area Information:
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is located 2 miles north of the town of Chillicothe, Ohio on State Highway 104. Hopewell Culture is 50 miles south of Columbus, Ohio.
The park’s location at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains has a moderate climate with seasonal weather. Summers are generally hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures in the summer average between 80 to 90 degrees F. Winters are cold with occasional, moderate accumulations of snow generally less than six inches. Daytime temperatures in the winter average between 30 to 40 degrees F.
Chillicothe (population 22,000) provides K-12 schools, a branch campus of the Ohio University, a regional hospital, and a variety of stores, restaurants, motels, and banks. Columbus provides all modern amenities, collegiate opportunities, and cultural features of a major metropolitan area. Park housing is not available.
