Principal Investigator / Senior Archaeologist (Cultural Resource Specialist) – Projects located in Arizona and throughout the southwestern United States (southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, west Texas), and opportunities elsewhere in Great Basin, West Mountain, and Pacific Regions

Established in 1999, Transcon Environmental, Inc., offers environmental consulting services throughout the United States with offices in Arizona, California, Utah, Wyoming, and Virginia. Our highly successful team of environmental planners, biologists and archaeologists provides environmental planning, permitting, and compliance as well as infrastructure siting, telecommunication studies, Class I and Class III studies, Historic Property Treatment Plans, and environmental construction management and monitoring. We currently employ over 45 archaeologists.
We are seeking a full-time senior archaeologist to act as the Principal Investigator, perform Project Management on small and large projects in the Southwest Region (AZ, NM, west TX, southern NV) and occasional Pacific Region work opportunities (southern CA). The employee must be permitted or permittable for work on agency land (i.e., BLM, USFS, etc.) and should be available to conduct fieldwork throughout the western U.S., with a focus on the southwest. This role will allow for opportunities to assist the Cultural Program Manager with recruitment and retention of cultural resource specialists, mentoring of junior staff, managing, and coordinating projects. The role also requires comfortability and experience working with Native American groups.
Compensation and Benefits
This position is exempt (salary) and eligible for full benefits. Travel will be required for some projects. When working multi-day assignments, employee will be reimbursed for meals, lodging, and mileage, if applicable. We anticipate employment to begin in late March 2021.
Compensation is based on qualifications and relevant experience.
Location:
This position will be telecommuting from within Arizona, southern California, or southern Nevada), and based out of our headquarters office in Mesa, Arizona.
Responsibilities:
• Planning and budgeting for projects
• Managing multiple projects simultaneously
• Acting as Principal Investigator for multiple projects simultaneously
• Assigning staff to conduct literature reviews/records searches
• Planning and collaborating with Field Directors for field survey, monitoring, and testing projects
• Planning and overseeing the execution of deliverables (reports of findings (i.e., Class I, III, etc.)
• Senior review of final documents (reports, site cards, etc.)
• Drafting proposals, scopes of work, and budgets
• Knowledgeable in compiling field data into site forms and reports
• Coordinating with local state, federal, and tribal agencies and State or Tribal Historic Preservation Offices
• Marketing with existing, new, and prospective clients
• Construction compliance inspecting and monitoring construction activities to ensure resource protection measures are being implemented
• Work will include both office and field work
• Successful applicants should be capable of working long days in the field throughout the year, including single- and multi-day assignments
Skills and Requirements:
• Graduate degree (MA/MS or PhD) in archaeology or closely related field
• Proficiency in Arizona prehistoric and historic archaeology
• Proficiency in southwest ceramics
• Proficiency in Arizona report writing and site card preparation
• Secretary of the Interior qualified
• At least three years of experience in the role of a PI/PM
• Permitted or immediately permittable within the state of Arizona as a Principal Investigator/Project Director/Field Director/Crew Chief (ASM, BLM, USFS, Navajo Nation, etc.)
• Ability to manage employees and field crews
• Ability to mentor junior staff
• Ability to delegate work assignments to capable staff
• Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently with short deadlines
• Highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
• Ability to interact and coordinate with state, federal, and tribal agencies
• Proficiency with standard field equipment and technology
Experience in the following is preferred:
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Previous cultural or other environmental project management experience
• Proficiency in archaeology throughout the western United States
• Familiarity with typical utility operations and maintenance activities
• Familiarity with compliance inspection contracting for large projects
• Familiarity with ESRI GIS applications (including desktop, ArcGIS, Collector, Survey123, etc.)
• Previous WAPA, FERC and/or NEPA trainings
• Excellent navigation skills and good driving record
• Experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle off-road or in rough terrain
• Experience working around heavy machinery and communicating with construction crews
