The George Washington Foundation has an immediate opening for an Archaeology Laboratory Assistant. The museum operates Ferry Farm, the boyhood home of George Washington and Historic Kenmore, an eighteenth-century house museum (Kenmore.org). The Archaeology Department is over 25 years old and continues to uncover, understand, and re-establish the Washington landscape.
The position of Laboratory Assistant is full-time and under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director. The foundation’s archaeological collections contain over 1.5 million artifacts and continues to grow. The Archaeology Department conducts an annual excavation with students and interns and operates a laboratory where artifacts are catalogued, cross-mended, analyzed, and stored for future exhibit or study.
The successful candidate will predominantly process artifacts including washing, labelling, cataloging, cross-mending, and storing artifacts. They will occasionally conduct research, analyze, and write about the artifacts in the collection. In addition, they will assist with a small summer excavation that runs for 12 weeks.
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Historical Archaeology or related field and experience excavating or cataloging colonial sites. The position pays 14.70 an hour and benefits include medical insurance, dental, a 403 program, paid holidays, sick leave, and paid vacation.
