The Heritage Conservation Branch of the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport is seeking a dynamic and highly-motivated professional archaeologist for the one year term position of Archaeologist.
As a member of the Archaeological Resource Management team under supervision of the Senior Archaeologist, you will participate in the protection and management of nearly 25,000 archaeological sites in Saskatchewan. You will be guided by the Heritage Property Act (1980) and your archaeological resource management expertise to achieve the best conservation outcomes for archaeological resources.
As Archaeologist, you will be responsible for:
reviewing land use and development proposals to determine their potential effect on archaeological resources and making recommendations concerning both the need for and scope of heritage resource impact assessment or other regulatory requirements;
reviewing archaeological investigation permit applications and recommending terms and conditions of permit issuance;
reviewing permit reports for completeness, compliance to standards and appropriateness of archaeological resource management recommendations;
responding to queries from the public, developers, government departments, consultants and others regarding the application and regulation of the Heritage Property Act (1980);
occasionally assisting with Provincial Archaeological Inventory-related tasks including site record processing, survey area plotting, inventory data verification, and archaeological data request responses;
contributing to briefing notes; strategic, quarterly and annual reporting; research and special projects; and
other duties as required.
The successful candidate will typically have completed a Master’s degree with thesis in archaeology from an accredited university and have extensive professional work experience in archaeological resource management in Western Canada.
